For the next few weeks, I will be busy preparing for a number of guests that will be visiting from out of town. I have a couple of weeks before the first group of guests arrive, but I have to get started preparing now. Being 6 months pregnant and taking care of a toddler takes up most of my time and energy.
Whenever I have guests, I always try to think ahead. I also think about my experiences as an out of town guest. I know the every guest is different so I come up with a general idea of what a guest would like and then I think specifically about that person that is staying.
The most important thing is to have a clean house. I've stayed at houses that were very not clean and it isn't very refreshing. Now it isn't exactly the biggest secret that I am not the cleanest person, but you wouldn't know it if you came to spend the night at my house.
I make sure the bathrooms are pristine, the carpet is freshly cleaned, and the house is clutter free. I make sure to have plenty of clean towels and an extra set of clean bed linens just in case.
I know how easy it is to forget to pack something. Toiletries are often the most left behind. I also know that bringing along shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, and such can be a big pain. I can go through the TSA allowed shampoo in like two days.
I'll leave the basket of toiletries on the bathroom counter so they cannot be missed.
In the basket I typically include: shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, and body wash.
I will edit the basket depending on the guest. I already know my mothers favorite shampoo and conditioner, as well as her toothpaste preference. Sometimes, if you don't know the person that well, you just have to guess at what they like.
I also provide an assortment of medicines, pain reliever, and tissues.
I know that some people like to read before bed or maybe early in the morning. I like to provide a variety of reading materials for my guests. I will often provide a number of magazines, sudoku, word searches, and crossword puzzles. A pen and a notepad are also a great idea.
Clock and Lamp
While most people are attached to their iPhone, I have guests that like having an actual alarm clock and table lamp. In addition to making sure they have these on the nightstand, I also make sure that there are available outlets so they can charge any electronics they might have with them.
Snacks and Beverages
I like to provide my guests with a variety of snacks and beverages. I like to include bottled water, chocolate, sandwich crackers, granola bars, and nuts. If I know they have a favorite, I will make sure to have that too.
